Vegetarianism and Spirituality

You may have heard it said that being a vegetarian isn't necessary for spiritual evolvement.
This may have been the case many years ago when cattle still roamed pasture, chickens scratched in the dirt and pigs had the freedom to roll in mud.
You are fooling yourself if you think this is still the case.
Buy meat, non ethically sourced, and you buy into an industry that practices the heights of cruelty to animals. So barbaric that when forced to watch such everyday scenes on TV people turn away, unable to look.
Cattle penned in feedlots. One thousand to an acre; not a blade of grass, not a tree in sight. Forty degree heat and minus temperatures to endure. Fed on hormones and protein to fatten them unnaturally fast. Standing up to their ankles in their collective waste.
Tens of thousands of chickens in vast sheds; minimal light so they become blind. Again not a blade of grass in site. Fed on hormones and protein til they become so fat their legs collapse and they can no longer stand. Without being able to walk, their bowels twist and they drown in their own waste. They are collected for slaughter by vacuum. If they break wings or legs or are impaled on the machine, that’s just too bad.
Pigs that are penned under a metal cage to lie their entire life on their side for the express purpose of suckling endless young til their hearts give out and they simply die.
Gandhi said you can measure the humanity of a society by the way it treats its animals.
One can only imagine what the future will think of us... if there is a future for humanity on this planet.
If you are a literate human being, reasonably educated, you are aware of these industry cruelties. If you buy stock standard meat you actively support and encourage them.
Knowing these things, can you honestly say that turning a blind eye, continuing to eat factory farmed meat has no bearing on your spirituality?
